Google is developing a new Google TV Streamer

Google is reportedly developing a next-generation Google TV Streamer with hands-free voice controls, presence sensing, and upgraded hardware. The upcoming streaming device is expected to retain the current model’s overall design while introducing several improvements to make watching TV and navigating content more convenient. According to a report published by 9to5Google on October 9, 2026, the new Google TV Streamer is in development, although Google has not announced the device officially. The report points to several potential hardware upgrades, but its specifications, pricing, and release date remain unconfirmed. New Google TV Streamer Could Add Hands-Free Voice Controls One of the most notable changes could be the addition of built-in microphones. The current Google TV Streamer relies on its remote for voice input, but the next-generation model could let users issue “Hey Google” commands directly to the streaming box. This could make it easier to search for movies, find TV shows, and control playback without reaching for the remote. However, the exact voice assistant and supported commands have not been confirmed. Presence Sensing Could Make Google TV More Useful The next Google TV Streamer could also introduce presence sensing, allowing the device to detect when someone approaches the television. According to the report, this feature could activate a Google Photos screensaver when someone enters the room. Moving closer to the TV could also reveal ambient information, including the time and weather forecast. Google TV televisions have already demonstrated similar functionality, so bringing it to a standalone streaming device could extend these ambient display features to more televisions. Faster Processor and More Storage Expected Google is reportedly planning hardware improvements beyond voice controls and presence sensing. The new Google TV Streamer could feature a faster processor and more storage than the existing model’s 32GB. These upgrades could improve navigation, app performance, and the amount of space available for applications. However, Google has not revealed the chipset, memory capacity, or final storage configuration. The device is also expected to retain a familiar design, with a slightly narrower body for a more compact footprint. Updated Remote Could Include More Shortcut Buttons The bundled remote may receive a modest refresh as well. According to 9to5Google, its overall design will remain similar, but two additional shortcut buttons could join the existing YouTube and Netflix buttons. The Find My Remote button on the back of the streaming device is also expected to remain. These changes could make it easier to access favourite streaming services and locate a misplaced remote. When Will the New Google TV Streamer Launch? Google has not confirmed a launch date, price, or complete specifications for the next-generation Google TV Streamer. The device is still in development, so its commercial availability remains uncertain. The reported upgrades could help Google strengthen its position in the streaming device market, particularly as Apple continues to develop its Apple TV platform. However, the extent of the competition will depend on the final hardware, software features, and pricing of both products. For now, the built-in microphones, presence sensing, faster processor, increased storage, and updated remote should be treated as reported features rather than officially confirmed specifications.
